You must have been overwhelmed by the AI hype lately.

It’s hard to differentiate between the actual advancements and the marketing overdo.

Hype happens when companies talk about their technology to appear more advanced than it is.

When businesses do this, then it leads to unrealistic expectations.

2024 is the war of attention, the one who pulls it will make a fortune.

This might help them attract investors, partners, and customers in the short term.

But in the long term, the customers will be disappointed.

Behind the AI Hype

Different companies host hackathons, and even if your idea could earn millions for the company and does not have AI integration, then you are out of the winning list.

VCs will not fund your product if you do not have AI integration or you do not have it planned.

Teams want AI and do the pivot for the whole ideation of the product because the leaders want to be ahead of the curve.

I have seen companies they instructed to have a solution looking for a problem.

They had a lot of meetings on what problem they could create that would then be solved.

Companies misallocate resources on AI technology that isn’t useful and ignore other areas that need investment.

Loss of trust by the customers when the product does not work as advertised.

So, what should a Leader do?

Asking questions will help you build your intuition around the reality of AI, here are some →

What do you need exactly from AI?

Are you looking to improve services, speed up data processing, or enhance product quality?

Is the problem you are solving, already have a use case in the market?

How well does the already available solution work in the real world?

What do independent experts/creators say about it?

How quickly you can create a pilot project?

What are independent AI consultants saying? (they are generally unbiased)

After testing the AI solution →

Does it meet the goals you set?

Is the solution reliable and cost-effective?

If you are satisfied with the answers then scale it, if not then get back to the drawing board.

My advice as an AI consultant

Always put content before style.

It's simple to get carried away by the hype and overlook the fundamentals of ethical conduct.

Investing in AI should be done to solve practical issues rather than just chase the market.

AI is not a cure for all issues.

Be wary of promises that seem too good to be true.

Concentrate on small steps toward progress and observable outcomes.

Take a thoughtful and informed approach, ensuring that it benefits your company.
